How to convert a video online

1
STEP 1

Upload your video

Drag your file in or browse to select it. We accept MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WEBM, FLV, WMV, 3GP, MPEG, and most other video formats. No account needed.

2
STEP 2

Pick your output format

Select the format you want to convert to. MP4 is the most universal choice. WEBM is good for web use. MOV is common in Apple workflows. MKV supports multiple audio tracks and subtitles. You can also toggle on compression if you want a smaller file at the same time.

3
STEP 3

Download the converted video

The conversion takes a few seconds to a couple of minutes. When it's ready, click download. The original file is untouched.

When to convert vs. when to compress

These are different operations and it's worth knowing which one you actually need.

Convert when the file format is the problem. Your video plays fine, but the app, platform, or device you're sending it to doesn't accept the format. Common examples: MOV files from iPhones that won't play on Windows, MKV files that won't upload to social media, or WEBM files that need to be MP4 for a presentation.

Compress when the file size is the problem. The format works fine everywhere, but the file is too large to email, upload, or share. Compression re-encodes the video at a lower bitrate to shrink it.

Both at once when you need to change the format and reduce the size. Toggle on the "Also compress?" option on this page to do both in a single pass.

Video formats explained

Not sure which format to pick? Here's a plain-language breakdown.

MP4

MP4 is the default for almost everything. It works in every browser, every phone, every media player, every social platform. If you don't have a specific reason to use something else, use MP4.

MOV

MOV is Apple's format. It works well in iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and macOS. Outside the Apple world, compatibility gets spotty. If someone can't open your MOV file, convert it to MP4.

WEBM

WEBM is an open format designed for the web. It's smaller than MP4 at the same quality and works in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Safari support has improved but isn't universal. Good for web developers embedding video on a page.

MKV

MKV is a flexible container that supports multiple audio tracks, subtitles, and chapter markers. Popular for movies and TV rips, but not supported by most social media platforms or some mobile apps. Convert to MP4 for sharing.

AVI

AVI is an older Microsoft format. It still works, but it's uncompressed or lightly compressed by default, so files tend to be large. Most people converting AVI files are moving them to MP4 to save space and improve compatibility.

FLV

FLV was Flash Video. Flash is dead. If you have FLV files, convert them to MP4.

WMV

WMV is another older Microsoft format. Same story as AVI. Convert to MP4 unless you specifically need WMV for a legacy workflow.

Popular conversions

MOVMP4

The most common conversion. iPhones and Macs record in MOV. Everything else prefers MP4. The conversion is fast because both formats use similar codecs.

MKVMP4

MKV files are common for downloaded video content. MP4 is easier to share and plays everywhere. Audio tracks and subtitles may need to be selected during conversion.

WEBMMP4

WEBM files are often downloaded from web sources. MP4 is more universally supported.

AVIMP4

Older cameras and screen recorders sometimes save as AVI. Converting to MP4 usually cuts the file size significantly even without extra compression, because AVI files tend to use less efficient encoding.

MP4WEBM

Useful for web developers who want smaller file sizes for embedded video. WEBM/VP9 can achieve better compression than MP4/H.264 at the same visual quality, though encoding takes a bit longer.

MP4MOV

Occasionally needed for Apple-specific editing workflows. The conversion is essentially a container change if the codec stays the same, so it's almost instant.
